Paul Kean

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in the 1950s, Paul Kean grew up surrounded by creativity. His family's artistic household meant the stage was never far away, and by the swinging sixties, he was soaking up British pop culture during a transformative year abroad in 1966. From pirate radio stations and Top of the Pops to the vibrant streets of Carnaby Street, these influences shaped his artistic soul.

The 1970s and 80s saw Kean evolve into a true polymath—musician, potter, producer, event manager, sound engineer, and band manager. He balanced these pursuits with fatherhood, curating exhibitions, and even dabbling in farming and cooking. In 1989, he formalised his creative skills with a diploma in Film and Television Production.

Kean's musical legacy began with Toy Love, a band that earned its place in the NZ Music Hall of Fame through extensive touring and chart success across Australia and New Zealand in 1979-80. For the following 43 years, he has performed and recorded alongside his partner Kaye Woodward in The Bats, a legendary outfit that has toured extensively throughout the USA, Europe, UK, and Australasia.

Now in his later years, Kean has embraced yet another creative chapter—acting in The Weed Eaters—proving that artistic evolution knows no age limit.
