However, when he, Roxton, and Marguerite end up right where they began, they deem the device a failure and proceed to return to the Treehouse—only to find it mysteriously vanished! As they investigate the changes around them, Roxton is seized by slavers wielding advanced weaponry and modified vehicles, where he uncovers a startling revelation: they have landed in 2033, eighteen years following a cataclysmic war that left the rest of the world in ruins, sparing only the Plateau.
