Feeling isolated and heartbroken from her betrayal, Nan is unable to face her family in Whitstable and resorts to living on the streets. Disguising herself as a male impersonator, she carves out a place for herself in the dark corners of the Victorian sexual underworld. There, she becomes entangled with a wealthy widow from a secretive Sapphic society who tempts her with a life of passion, thrill, and opulence, but this alluring offer comes with dangerous consequences.
