A staggering 400,000 individuals fell ill with a severe gastrointestinal disease, leading to 4,000 hospitalizations and over 100 fatalities before the crisis was contained. Initially, health officials believed it was merely influenza, but it soon became clear that the situation was far more serious and challenging to diagnose.
