S03E21 What Carter Lost
In any other year, the 1988 team from Carter High School in Dallas would be remembered as one of the finest in Texas football history, boasting 28 players who earned college scholarships, with eight going on to play professionally. Overcoming racial bias and a scandal regarding academic performance, the team still managed to secure the state championship, despite being overshadowed by Odessa Permian in literature and film. However, their triumph was marred when six players were implicated in an armed robbery, tarnishing the community’s reputation. The academic issues ultimately led the UIL to revoke their championship title.
