Eddie Koiki Mabo advocates for the recognition of his people's ownership of Murray Island, a place they have inhabited for generations. In 1992, just six months after his passing and a decade after the initial claim was filed in Queensland, Australia’s highest court rules in favor of Mabo. This landmark decision abolishes the concept of terra nullius, which held that the land was unowned at the time of European colonization.
