In 1989, the origin of The Lone Gunmen unfolds as a straight-laced government worker, a sexually adventurous audiovisual expert, and a socially awkward computer hacker cross paths with Susanne Modeski, a mysterious woman holding proof of a government cover-up. Their efforts to reveal the conspiracy take a turn for the worse when Susanne is seized by a team of men-in-black, led by the enigmatic X. This incident transforms them into a jittery band of vigilantes, dedicated to uncovering the truth behind government secrets.
