However, Ben is skeptical of Hoss' new acquaintance. When the Cartwrights find themselves in a shootout with a mining group, Patch freezes in fear. He carries a profound terror of violence rooted in a traumatic event from his youth, yet he realizes that to thrive in the West, he must confront and conquer his fear.
