The Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, marked a turning point in World War II, but the fight was far from over. After establishing their footholds, American, British, and Canadian forces paid a heavy price in blood. Operation Cobra, launched near Caen with devastating air bombardments, finally cracked the German defenses, enabling a decisive Allied breakout. From August 1944, they regrouped and pushed steadily toward Paris, facing fierce German opposition at every step despite their growing momentum.
