While spending an evening at a local coffee house, Shirley becomes captivated by Beatnik culture. She starts dressing in black and sulking around their apartment, lamenting that her life lacks any "cool" factor. In an effort to bring her friend back to reality, Laverne steps in, determined to help Shirley shake off this Beatnik phase and rediscover her former self.
