Lucy has been bonding closely with her new friend, Nicole, as they struggle together in their biology class. When Eric steps in to offer them tutoring, Matt is dealing with his own issues after being turned down by a girl, only to discover she’s already taken. Meanwhile, Ruthie intentionally flunks her math test to gain her mother's attention, prompting Simon to intervene. He offers her 50 cents for each correct answer on the next test, but Ruthie surprises him by acing it, collecting $20. Mary discovers Nicole's self-harm in the bathroom and informs Eric, who then reaches out to Nicole's father with resources for help. As Nicole prepares for therapy, her family decides to relocate to Chicago for a few months.
