Catherine is summoned by a producer of adult films to examine disturbing footage from a snuff film featuring the violent murder of a woman. Unfortunately, the evidence is minimal: the killer is barely visible, the shabby hotel room could be located anywhere, and the film was delivered to the producer without any identifying information. Meanwhile, Grissom looks into a separate homicide outside the city, where a body, covered in fire ants, is discovered concealed in a large toolbox. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim had been dead for more than a year.
