As Mystic Falls gears up for its annual Illumination Night, the town is suddenly overrun by vengeful spirits. Following a fierce confrontation with one of these angry apparitions, Damon turns to Bonnie for help in uncovering the source of their unexpected strength. Meanwhile, Elena persuades Jeremy to tap into his link to the other side, hoping to discover a new method to reach Stefan, which forces Jeremy into a difficult decision. In the midst of all this, Alaric stumbles upon a long-buried secret from the past.
