Jim and Cheryl embody the quintessential middle-class American couple. They enjoy a comfortable life in their suburban home with two lively daughters and a baby boy, though they occasionally bicker over unresolved issues, like the infamous car door incident. This time, the tension arises as Cheryl struggles to let their daughter Ruby start kindergarten alone. Jim attributes Cheryl's anxiety to her being a woman and decides to take Ruby himself, but he too finds it hard to let go. The situation escalates when Cheryl learns he secretly changed Ruby's school without consulting her. Meanwhile, they also attempt to help Andy reconcile with his girlfriend.
