Amidst a scorching heat wave, Chief Clifford is summoned elsewhere, leaving Sgt. Broadhurst in command. A football gambling operation, benefiting from “insider information on injuries,” misplaces a crucial black book and starts silencing witnesses in their frantic hunt for it.
