In this episode, the notorious radio payola scandals from the 1940s and 50s come to light. Simon Brimmer makes another attempt to outsmart Ellery but ultimately fails once more. The story revolves around the murder of beloved songwriter Alvin Winer, who is killed during a musical break on a radio show while searching for a record in the station's library. Ellery is called upon to exonerate a friend who has been accused of stealing one of Winer's songs, adding another layer of intrigue to the case.
