For the first time, This Old House let fans pick the project. A nationwide Dream Kitchen search ended in an online vote, with the Smith family of Lake Forest, Illinois, winning the most support. The goal: carve out more space in a cramped, outdated kitchen so Mike and Heidi Smith and their 5-year-old triplets can cook and dine comfortably. Plans for the 1928 Tudor include custom cabinets, new appliances, moving a poorly placed powder room, and turning an old greenhouse into a front eating area. To keep the family at home during renovations, Richard Trethewey sets up a temporary kitchen on the sun porch, while Norm and Steve review design ideas with architect John Krasnodebski.
