The morning starts at Lake Forest’s historic Market Square, America’s first drive-up shopping center, built in 1916 by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. Back at the project house, demolition is finished. Project manager Jim Eimerman shows Norm and Steve the plumbing and electrical rough-in, the reframed bathroom, and brickwork around relocated windows. Steve and homeowner Heidi Smith tour a converted 1920s carriage house owned by designer Kris Boyaris and her architect husband, John Krasnodebski. Steve and John discuss squeezing a powder room into a previously dead hallway space. Meanwhile, demolition uncovered asbestos-wrapped pipes. Norm meets an abatement team using stabilization and containment instead of removal.
