S11E05 The Roman Fort That Wasn't There - Syndale, Kent
The events that transpired right after the Romans landed in 43 AD remain a mystery, especially since no Roman fort has yet been uncovered in this region of South East England. Time Team sets out to uncover this historical puzzle. Local archaeologist Paul Wilkinson is confident he has identified what appears to be a military ditch that would have encircled a fort, located near Watling Street. However, geophysical surveys fail to detect any signs of a ditch, leading to one of their most challenging excavations, overseen by Neil Holbrook. Meanwhile, Phil spends a day with the Ermine Street Guard, joined by Roman historian Tony Wilmott and pottery expert Malcolm Lyne.
