In Oregon's rugged hills, sculptor Andrea conceals fugitive Kimble from Deputy Howe. When the deputy discovers Kimble's hiding spot, he flees deeper into the mountains and finds shelter with John Mallory, a reclusive former scholar who has lived apart from society for 14 years, accompanied only by his fierce German Shepherds. Although aware of Kimble’s criminal status, Mallory grows fond of him and insists he stay. As Kimble tends to Mallory’s declining health, the threat of Deputy Howe's pursuit looms ever closer, intensifying their precarious situation.
