They soon discover that she is Maylene, the Gym Leader of the city, prompting Ash to challenge her to a Gym Battle. However, Maylene is feeling downcast after recently losing to Ash's rival, Paul. Reggie, Paul's older brother, provides more context about her situation and assists Ash's Staravia in mastering the Brave Bird move.
