S34E17 Essex 2012/13 Part 2: Human Centered Design, Demolition

Kevin travels to Boston to visit the Institute for Human Centered Design, where he learns about creating environments that facilitate ease of living for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Meanwhile, in Essex, Tom and Roger begin site preparations to ensure that doorways will become level with the ground, eliminating steps. Inside the building, demolition reveals strange and hazardous framing from a prior renovation that must be addressed. In the small kitchen extension, excavation is completed, and footings are being laid. Architect Sally DeGan shows Kevin that accessible homes can be stylish by focusing on essential elements: single-level layouts, ample space, adequate lighting, no steps, and barrier-free showers. Back in Essex, several weeks later, the addition's foundation is finished, along with the first floor platform and the kitchen's gable end.
